EMDR Therapy in UK

How Does It Work?

EMDR unblocks the memory, images, triggers, and all other associated elements from a traumatic experience and enables the person to process them healthily.

It is not hypnotherapy and it is not re-traumatizing as the present-day/here and now is maintained throughout the therapy sessions. It is based on the research that rapid eye movement (REM) naturally occurs when we sleep to process our thoughts and feelings. When we experience a traumatic event, we can overwhelm our brains and become unable to process the thoughts and feelings associated with the event. The negative disturbing memory stays with us and may result in long-term emotional problems. EMDR kick starts rapid eye movement and allows this natural process to resolve these negative memories.

Our EMDR Sessions

The therapist will help you identify the disturbing images, thoughts and feelings associated with your psychological problem. The images will not be difficult to identify as they usually occur as flashbacks, however the feelings and thoughts at the time can be more difficult. However, it is important to note that you will not be expected to talk in detail about the situation or event. The purpose of EMDR is help you manage your memories and to not feel as disturbed or upset by them in the future. The quantity of sessions that you’ll require depends largely on your personal issues. Although one session may be sufficient enough for some patients, for others it may take several.

How Can EMDR Help?

There has been more than 30 controlled outcome studies that show its effectiveness. In some studies, up to 90% of trauma survivors appeared to have no PTSD symptoms after just three sessions. As well as being beneficial for patients that are suffering with PTSD, it can also be beneficial for patients suffering from the following; anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, stress, performance anxiety, sleep disturbances, and more. EMDR is highly effective for many patients as it helps the brain to ”unstick” and reprocess particular memories so that it is no longer intense.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a therapy approach designed to help people process traumatic or distressing experiences in a healthier way, so that the memories feel less overwhelming and have less impact on day-to-day life.

EMDR works by helping a person process distressing memories, images, thoughts, and feelings that may feel stuck or unresolved. The aim is to reduce the emotional intensity linked to those experiences so they become less disturbing over time, while helping the brain process them in a more manageable way.

EMDR is commonly used to support people experiencing trauma and PTSD, but it may also help with phobias, anxiety problems, grief, bereavement, panic attacks, stress, sleep disturbances, eating disorders, and performance anxiety. Suitability depends on the individual’s needs and the issues being explored in therapy.

No, you are not usually expected to talk in detail about the situation or event. The therapist will help you identify the thoughts, feelings, and images linked to the distressing experience, but the purpose of EMDR is to help you process memories safely without needing to go over every detail at length.

No, EMDR is not the same as hypnotherapy. EMDR is a structured therapy approach that focuses on processing distressing memories while keeping you grounded in the present throughout the session.

The number of EMDR sessions needed can vary depending on the person and the issues being addressed. For some people, a smaller number of sessions may be enough, while others may need longer-term work to process more complex or long-standing difficulties.

Yes, EMDR is designed to be carried out in a safe and supportive therapeutic setting. The therapy is structured to help you stay grounded in the present while working through distressing material, with your therapist guiding the process carefully throughout.

EMDR may be helpful for people whose current distress is linked to past traumatic or upsetting experiences that still feel emotionally intense. It can be a useful option for those who want support with processing difficult memories and reducing the impact those memories have on everyday life.
