Private Adult ADHD Assessment uk
Adult ADHD can affect focus, organisation, time management, emotional regulation, impulsivity and day-to-day functioning. For many adults, these difficulties have been present for years, but only become clearer when work, relationships, parenting, study or daily responsibilities become harder to manage.
The Therapy Company provides private adult ADHD assessments across the UK, with online appointments available where appropriate and in-person appointments available at our Preston location.
Assessments are carried out by highly experienced, GMC-registered Consultant Psychiatrists in line with NICE guidance for ADHD diagnosis and management.
An adult ADHD assessment can help clarify whether ADHD may be contributing to long-standing difficulties with attention, restlessness, impulsivity, organisation or emotional overwhelm. If a diagnosis is made, our psychiatrist can discuss suitable next steps, including treatment options and medication where appropriate.
We also offer specialist ADHD assessments for children and young people.

NOTE:
If an ADHD diagnosis is made and medication is prescribed, follow-up appointments are usually required every four weeks for around three months, or until a stable medication regime is reached. This is known as the titration period.
Once medication is stable, The Therapy Company may be able to request a Shared Care Agreement with your GP so they can take over prescribing within your treatment plan.
Shared care is not guaranteed. Patients are advised to discuss this with their GP before booking an assessment.
WHEN MIGHT AN ADULT ADHD ASSESSMENT BE WORTH CONSIDERING?
An adult ADHD assessment may be worth considering if difficulties with focus, organisation, impulsivity or restlessness are affecting everyday life.
Common reasons adults seek an ADHD assessment include:
- Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
- Poor concentration
- Losing track of time
- Feeling restless or mentally busy
- Impulsive decisions
- Emotional overwhelm
- Problems with organisation
- Difficulty prioritising
- Feeling unable to keep up with normal daily demands.
A private adult ADHD assessment can help explore whether ADHD may be part of the picture and what support may be appropriate.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A PRIVATE ADULT ADHD ASSESSMENT?
A private adult ADHD assessment is a detailed clinical assessment carried out by a Consultant Psychiatrist. The aim is to understand your current symptoms, developmental history, mental health, daily functioning and whether your difficulties meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD.
The assessment may include a review of your current concerns, discussion of childhood and educational history, work and relationship functioning, medical history, mental health history, and any previous diagnoses or treatment.
Standardised ADHD rating scales or questionnaires may also be used where appropriate. Our psychiatrist may consider other conditions that can overlap with ADHD, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, autism and substance use.
The assessment is designed to look at the full clinical picture, rather than relying on one symptom checklist.

What support may be discussed after an ADHD diagnosis?
If an ADHD diagnosis is made, the psychiatrist can discuss suitable next steps. This may include medication where clinically appropriate, follow-up appointments, therapy options, coping strategies, or communication with your GP where shared care may be considered.
Further information about each option is outlined below.
CBT
Cognitive behavioural therapy may help some adults with ADHD develop strategies around planning, organisation, emotional regulation, procrastination and unhelpful thinking patterns. CBT may be useful as part of wider support after diagnosis, especially where ADHD overlaps with anxiety, low mood or stress.
Medication
Medication may be discussed if an ADHD diagnosis is made and our psychiatrist considers it clinically appropriate. Our psychiatrist will consider your symptoms, medical history, mental health, risks, preferences and suitability before recommending medication. If medication is prescribed, follow-up appointments are usually needed during the titration period.
Counselling
Counselling may support adults who are dealing with the emotional impact of long-standing ADHD symptoms, low self-esteem, relationship strain, stress, anxiety or low mood. For some people, counselling can sit alongside psychiatry, medication review or CBT as part of wider mental health support.
