What is mental health counselling and how can it help me?

Mental health counselling is a form of talking therapy that gives you a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a qualified professional. It can help people who are struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, or other emotional and mental health concerns. The aim is to help you better understand what you are going through and support you with practical ways to move forward.

In your first therapy session, the focus is on getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to therapy. Your therapist will ask about your current concerns, relevant background, and what you would like support with.

You will have time to talk openly, ask questions, and discuss what therapy may look like going forward. No treatment begins without your agreement, and there is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.

The session is designed to help you feel safe, understood, and clear about the next steps.

Yes, The Therapy Company offers both face-to-face appointments at its Lancashire location and confidential remote therapy sessions by telephone or video link. This gives people more flexibility when accessing support and allows appointments to fit around work, family life, travel, or personal preference.

Yes, The Therapy Company offers both ASD and ADHD assessments as part of its wider mental health services. ASD assessments are available for young people aged 7 to 16, and the team also provides adult and child ADHD assessments. If you are unsure which assessment or service is most appropriate, the team can advise you on the next step.

Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a structured talking therapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours affect one another. It is commonly used to support people with anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties. CBT focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns and developing practical strategies that can help you cope more effectively in day-to-day life.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy approach often used to help people process trauma and distressing experiences. EMDR may also be used in support of people struggling with anxiety, PTSD, and certain other difficulties where past experiences continue to affect emotional wellbeing. Suitability for EMDR is discussed with a clinician or therapist as part of the assessment process.

The Therapy Company provides mental health services for adults, children, and young people, with support available for individuals aged 7 and upwards. Some services have their own age criteria, such as child psychiatry and ASD assessments, so the most appropriate option will depend on the person’s age, needs, and the type of support required.

To book a mental health counselling appointment, you can contact The Therapy Company directly by phone or email. When getting in touch, it helps to provide your name, date of birth, contact number, the type of therapy you are looking for, your availability, and whether you would prefer a face-to-face or remote appointment. The team can then guide you on the most suitable next step.
