The ADHD Diagnosis Pathway
The diagnosis of ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) typically involves a comprehensive evaluation conducted by one of our consultant psychiatrists at the Therapy Company.
The process usually includes the following stages:
1 - Initial Assessment
For ADHD, we will arrange an initial assessment with you that will help us to gather the necessary information required. For example, we’ll need key information regarding your medical history and any previous diagnosis or treatments.
2 - Diagnosis
After the interview, we will then look at the diagnostic criteria element. Ultimately, this is an assessment that evaluates persistent and impairing symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are inconsistent with the individual’s developmental level.
3 - Rating Scales & Questionnaires
Standardised rating scales and questionnaires may be used to gather additional information about the individual’s behaviour and functioning. These tools are completed by the individual, parents and other relevant individuals who can provide valuable insights into the individual’s behaviour across different settings.
Further stages of ADHD diagnosis may also include medical evaluations and collaborations before giving the definitive diagnosis with full accuracy.
Psychiatry Treatments For ADHD
The Therapy Company provide on-going treatments to manage ADHD symptoms including medication, CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and Counselling.
Here’s some further information about each one:
CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a common type of therapy used to help and manage ADHD symptoms. CBT can help individuals to identify and change negative thinking patterns and therefore develop much better coping strategies. Ultimately, CBT can help you to become much more self-aware of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. As a result of this, it can lead to less impulsivity and increased attention span.
Medication
Our private psychiatrists at The Therapy Company are also able to provide specific medications that can help to manage ADHD symptoms. Specific medications prescribed from our psychiatrists can help improve focus, reduce impulsivity, and decrease hyperactivity. Non-stimulant medications may also be used as alternatives or in combination with stimulant medications.
Counselling
While counselling can not directly treat the symptoms of ADHD, it’s a great option to consider for many patients and can work well alongside medication and/or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Counselling can provide valuable support, guidance, and strategies to manage the emotional and psychological challenges often associated with the condition. Additionally, it can also help with goal setting, motivation, and provide additional emotional support.
Group
Group therapy ADHD coaching will be introduced soon.
