ADULT PSYCHIATRY AT THE THERAPY COMPANY
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on assessing, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. A psychiatrist is a medically qualified doctor who can assess mental health symptoms, consider possible diagnoses and discuss treatment options, including medication where clinically appropriate.
At The Therapy Company, adults can access Consultant Psychiatrist appointments from our Preston location or online across the UK where appropriate. Our psychiatrists work alongside therapists and other mental health professionals, allowing us to consider different forms of support depending on the person’s needs.
WHEN MIGHT ADULT PSYCHIATRY BE HELPFUL?
Adult psychiatry may be appropriate if you are looking for a medical assessment of your mental health, diagnostic clarity, medication advice, or specialist support for symptoms that feel complex, persistent or difficult to understand.
People may consider seeing a psychiatrist when they are experiencing difficulties such as:
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety or panic symptoms
- Intrusive thoughts or OCD symptoms
- Trauma-related symptoms or PTSD
- Mood changes or possible bipolar disorder
- Attention, focus or impulsivity concerns
- Symptoms that may relate to ADHD
- Psychosis or unusual experiences
- Difficulties that have not improved with previous support
- Uncertainty about whether therapy, medication or assessment is the right route
If you want to understand some of the less obvious ways OCD can present, our guide to OCD symptoms looks at intrusive thoughts, reassurance seeking, checking, mental rituals and avoidance.
A psychiatry appointment can help clarify what may be contributing to your symptoms and what the most appropriate next step may be. Depending on the assessment, this could include diagnostic feedback, medication advice or review, recommendations for therapy, further assessment or referral to another suitable service.
PSYCHIATRY APPOINTMENTS
A psychiatry appointment takes place in a confidential and supportive setting. Appointments are available face-to-face from our Preston location, with online appointments also available where clinically appropriate.
Your Consultant Psychiatrist will ask about your current symptoms, medical and mental health history, medication, circumstances and how your difficulties are affecting everyday life.
You may be asked open-ended questions, particularly if the situation is complex or you are unsure where to begin. The purpose of the appointment is to build a clearer clinical picture and discuss appropriate next steps. These may include diagnostic feedback, medication, therapy, further assessment or another form of support depending on the findings.
HOW CAN A PSYCHIATRIST HELP?

- Diagnosis where clinically appropriate
- Medication advice or review
- Recommendations for therapy such as CBT, counselling or EMDR

What is adult psychiatry?
Adult psychiatry provides specialist medical assessment and treatment for adults experiencing mental health difficulties. A psychiatrist can assess symptoms, consider possible diagnoses, discuss treatment options and provide longer-term medical oversight where appropriate. The Therapy Company provides an independent route to Consultant Psychiatrist assessment.
When might I need to see a psychiatrist rather than a counsellor or therapist?
A psychiatrist may be appropriate when someone needs a medical assessment of their mental health, a formal diagnosis, advice on medication, or support with more complex or persistent symptoms. Counselling and therapy can be very helpful, but psychiatry is often the right route when a person needs diagnostic clarity, medication review, or specialist clinical oversight.
What can a psychiatrist help diagnose and treat?
A psychiatrist can help assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, psychosis, addictions, phobias, personality disorders, and other mental health concerns. The most appropriate treatment plan will depend on the individual’s symptoms, history, and needs.
Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication?
Yes, a psychiatrist can consider whether medication is appropriate as part of a wider treatment plan. Depending on the individual situation, treatment may involve medication, talking therapies such as CBT or counselling, or a combination of approaches. Any recommendations are based on clinical assessment and discussion with the patient.
What is the purpose of an adult psychiatry appointment?
An adult psychiatry appointment is designed to understand what a person is experiencing, explore possible causes, and identify the most appropriate next steps. This may include assessment of mental and physical health, discussion of symptoms and background, consideration of diagnosis, and a plan for treatment, support, or further review.
Can psychiatry help if I have been struggling for a long time without answers?
Yes, psychiatry can be helpful for people who have been living with ongoing mental health difficulties and want a clearer understanding of what may be going on. For some people, an assessment provides a formal diagnosis or a clearer treatment pathway, which can be an important first step in moving forward.
Where does The Therapy Company provide adult psychiatry?
The Therapy Company provides adult psychiatry from its Preston location and also offers secure online appointments. This gives adults the option of accessing psychiatric support in person or remotely, depending on their circumstances and preferences.
Why do people choose private adult psychiatry?
People may choose private adult psychiatry because they want timely access to a specialist assessment, a confidential setting, and a treatment plan tailored to their needs. For some, it is a way to gain clearer answers about their mental health and explore support options with an experienced psychiatrist.
