Our Counselling Sessions in UK
Within the first counselling session, we will take the time to really get to know you better and understand your difficulties on a more personal level. It’s good to see the first session as a fact-find and a session for building trust between our counsellor and yourself.
We’ll take the time to understand the specific difficulties, feelings and emotions that you’re going through before proposing a plan to work through them to get you feeling like yourself again. If you’re happy to proceed, the next 5-8 sessions will be strategically working through your difficulties by getting you to question the more negative feelings that you’re experiencing. In some cases, it may be that it’s in your best interest for our team to recommend and type of talking therapy, such as CBT for example.
Counselling, and other talking therapies, can help you to cope with various mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders by working through difficult feelings and emotions. As human beings, we experience a wide spectrum of emotions that are constantly going up and down. Counselling can help you to best navigate the changes in your feelings and emotions, better managing the more negative emotions such as low self-esteem or anger, for example. Other issues can also be helped through counselling such as sexual identity.

What is private counselling?
Private counselling is confidential talking therapy with a trained professional that gives you space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive setting. It can help people work through emotional difficulties, life events, relationship problems, stress, anxiety, and other personal challenges.
How does private counselling work?
Private counselling works by giving you the time and space to speak openly with a counsellor about what you are going through. At The Therapy Company, counselling is based on a person-centred approach, which means the sessions are designed to help you feel heard, supported, and able to explore your thoughts and emotions without judgement.
Who might benefit from private counselling?
Private counselling may be helpful for adults who are dealing with anxiety, depression, work-related stress, relationship breakdown, difficult life events, low self-esteem, anger, eating disorders, or other emotional challenges. It can also support people who want help understanding and managing how they feel.
Are counselling sessions one-to-one or can couples attend?
Counselling at The Therapy Company can be arranged on a one-to-one basis or as a couple, depending on the issues being addressed and what support is needed. This can be helpful for individuals working through personal difficulties as well as couples looking to address relationship problems.
What happens in the first counselling session?
The first counselling session is usually focused on getting to know you better and understanding your difficulties on a more personal level. It is often a chance to build trust with your counsellor, explore what has brought you to counselling, and begin discussing what kind of support may be most helpful.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
The number of counselling sessions needed will depend on your circumstances, the difficulties you are facing, and what you hope to achieve from counselling. Some people may benefit from a shorter block of sessions, while others may need longer-term support.
Can private counselling lead to other types of therapy if needed?
Yes, in some cases counselling may help identify that another form of support could be more appropriate, such as CBT or another talking therapy. Where relevant, The Therapy Company can recommend the most suitable next step based on your needs and progress.
Where can I access private counselling with The Therapy Company?
The Therapy Company provides private counselling in Preston and also offers highly secure online appointments. This gives adults the option to access support in person or remotely, depending on what feels most practical and comfortable for them.
