EMDR Preston & Online Appointments
The Therapy Company provide EMDR in Preston (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) which is an approach that helps people to overcome long-term emotional distress to deal with past traumatic events that have gone unprocessed or processed in a negative way and consequently incorporated into an individual’s cognitive processes. It is generally used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but can also successfully treat phobias, anxiety problems, grief, and bereavement. It can also help us process unsettling or disturbing feelings arising out of unpleasant situations such as arguments.
For example, if a person’s neuro-pathways mean that a particular trigger (visual or otherwise) creates a negative emotion or response, it is so automatic, that thinking differently is not always an option. Counseling can help them try to accept it and understand it but not overcome it. In the same way, CBT strategies are unable to challenge the belief and encourage the person to think differently, because the choice to think differently is simply not there.

How Does It Work?
EMDR unblocks the memory, images, triggers, and all other associated elements from a traumatic experience and enables the person to process them healthily.
It is not hypnotherapy and it is not re-traumatizing as the present-day/here and now is maintained throughout the therapy sessions. It is based on the research that rapid eye movement (REM) naturally occurs when we sleep to process our thoughts and feelings. When we experience a traumatic event, we can overwhelm our brains and become unable to process the thoughts and feelings associated with the event. The negative disturbing memory stays with us and may result in long-term emotional problems. EMDR kick starts rapid eye movement and allows this natural process to resolve these negative memories.
Our EMDR Sessions
The therapist will help you identify the disturbing images, thoughts and feelings associated with your psychological problem. The images will not be difficult to identify as they usually occur as flashbacks, however the feelings and thoughts at the time can be more difficult. However, it is important to note that you will not be expected to talk in detail about the situation or event. The purpose of EMDR is help you manage your memories and to not feel as disturbed or upset by them in the future. The quantity of sessions that you’ll require depends largely on your personal issues. Although one session may be sufficient enough for some patients, for others it may take several.
How Can EMDR Help?
There has been more than 30 controlled outcome studies that show its effectiveness. In some studies, up to 90% of trauma survivors appeared to have no PTSD symptoms after just three sessions. As well as being beneficial for patients that are suffering with PTSD, it can also be beneficial for patients suffering from the following; anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, stress, performance anxiety, sleep disturbances, and more. EMDR is highly effective for many patients as it helps the brain to ”unstick” and reprocess particular memories so that it is no longer intense.

As the name suggests (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), this treatment is centred largely around eye movements but other methods, such as auditory tones or hand tapping, can also be used for maximum benefit. The specific type of bilateral stimulation depends on the individual’s preferences and the judgement of the mental health professional that you’ll be assigned to at The Therapy Company.
EMDR is not suitable for every patient. That’s why we offer an initial consultation / appointment to get to know your current circumstances before proposing the most suitable treatment options. It is essential to have a comprehensive assessment by a trained EMDR professional at The Therapy Company to determine if EMDR is appropriate and to discuss alternative treatment options if needed.
An EMDR session is well-structured and backed by scientific studies to help you manage various mental health and grief symptoms. The session(s) will include identifying the target memory, bilateral stimulation, and focusing on associated thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Essentially, the goal is to desensitise and reprocess the memory.
