Psychiatrist For Phobias

The Therapy Company are your trusted and accredited psychiatrists providing various therapies, psychiatry, counselling and treatments in relation to a number of fears, phobias, traumas and more.

We’ve been providing psychiatry services for decades and have supported thousands of people across Lancashire and the North West. One of our advanced areas of psychiatry is related to phobias.

A phobia is an overwhelming and personally consuming thought, feeling or reaction to a specific object, place, situation, animal or person.

Phobias are a bit like fears but more intense though both can cause copious amounts of stress and suffering. If you’re experiencing problems with a phobia, we’d highly recommend seeking professional help from a psychiatrist such as ourselves.

We offer a range of services and treatments to help with your phobia and we’re confident we’ll be able to support you in getting past it.

Diagnosis For Phobias

There are various stages covered in the diagnosis of phobias. However, diagnosis can be simplified into the following three stages;-

Initial Interview– Our psychiatrists at The Therapy Company will conduct an initial interview to gather information about your symptoms, medical history, and any specific fears or phobic reactions they experience. This interview helps establish a foundation for further assessment. You’ll feel comfortable throughout.

Diagnostic Criteria – The next stages of diagnosis for phobias will be centred around diagnosis criteria. Your selected psychiatrist professional will refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and other professional criteria’s to determine if your symptoms meet the criteria for a specific phobia. The DSM-5 provides a list of phobias, such as specific phobia, social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia, along with specific diagnostic criteria for each.

Collaboration & Feedback – Throughout the assessment process, your selected psychiatrist will collaborate with you, making you feel comfortable and encouraging you to provide honest and detailed information about your unique experiences. Your feedback and perspective are crucial for an accurate diagnosis.

Psychiatry Treatments For Phobias

After diagnosis of phobia(s), if applicable, the next step is to ensure that we are providing the most suitable treatment option to help you manage your most prominent symptoms. Here are the three main treatments offered for phobia(s):

CBT – One of the most popular types of therapy for phobias is called cognitive-behavioural therapy or CBT for short. CBT is a talking therapy that uses reframing strategies in order to make you think and react differently to a set or circumstances or phobia.

Exposure Therapy –  As the name suggests, exposure therapy is when you’re quite literally exposed to the phobia in a controlled environment. This type of therapy has been scientifically demonstrated to work because people quite literally face their phobias head on.

Medication – In some cases, medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or benzodiazepines may be prescribed to help manage symptoms of anxiety associated with phobias. Medication is typically used in conjunction with therapy and is more commonly recommended for severe cases or when therapy alone is not sufficient.

Types Of Phobias

Here at The Therapy Company, we are able to provide diagnosis and treatment for a a wide range of phobias. There are three predominant categories of phobias that include; specific phobias, social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia. Let’s take a look into each one in further detail:

Specific Phobias – Specific phobias involve an intense, irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. Examples may include phobias related to the natural environment such as a fear of heights or certain animals.

Social Anxiety – Social anxiety disorder involves an intense fear or anxiety about social situations where individuals may feel embarrassed, judged, or humiliated. It often includes a fear of public speaking, social gatherings, or interacting with others.

Agoraphobia – Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations or places where escape might be difficult or where help may not be readily available in the event of a panic attack or other distressing symptoms.
