Improve your mental health
Going for a walk has always been regarded as one of the best ways to relax. Now a study has shown that for city-dwellers exposure to trees, the sky and birdsong is also beneficial for mental wellbeing.
Researchers at King’s College London teamed up with landscape architects J & L Gibbons and art foundation Nomad Projects to use smartphone-based technology to assess the relationship between nature in cities and momentary mental well-being in real time.
They found that being outdoors – seeing trees, hearing birdsong, and seeing the sky – and feeling in contact with nature were associated with higher levels of mental well-being. Additionally, the beneficial effects of nature were especially evident in people at greater risk of mental health issues.
